Biodegradability Study on Filming Amines – FINEAMIN 06

In a study conducted by Eurofins Ecotoxicologie France, FINEAMIN 06 has proved to be readily biodegradable, with a biodegradability rate of 90% after 28 days of test. To be considered as ready biodegradable, a product (mainly, a pure substance) must show a biodegradation rate of at least 70% in the 10-day interval which has to fall within the 28 (firsts) days of the test.

FINEAMIN 06, our well-known for its efficiency, industrial water treatment mixture of filming amines and cleaning polymers, passed the ready biodegradable level in the first 7 days, the degradation percentage stabilizing itself to a 90% rate towards the end of the testing period.

EVALUATION OF READY BIODEGRADABILITY: DISSOLVED ORGANIC CARBON DIE-AWAY FOLLOWING THE OECD 301 A GUIDELINE   Test report n° 20FER6-1175 – 2020/12/09

biodegradability of filming amines

The assay was conducted by including these following preparations:

  • The tested sample with a concentration of 15 mg/L of DOC (2 flasks),
  • A control assay of the seeding (blank) (2 flasks),
  • An assay with reference substance with a biodegradability rate superior to 90% (sodium acetate at 15 mg/L of DOC),
  • An assay with the control of inhibition containing the tested sample and the reference substance at tested concentrations.

Several assays were under aeration stirring at 22 +/- 2°C.

A mineral medium was prepared using ultra-pure water. Reference substance: sodium acetate.
A bacterial inoculum was prepared using pretreated and exactly quantified activated sludge from Maxeville’s water treatment plant (France) dealing primarily with domestic waste water (98%).

FINEAMIN 06 was added directly in assay bottles containing 1L mineral medium and activated sludge with a pH of 7.4.

eurofins testing

Eurofins Ecotoxicologie France is a high level of reliability and expertise laboratory for biodegradability and ecotoxicological studies, one of the 800 worldwide, state-of-art, product testing subsidiaries of Eurofins Group. Founded in 1987, the Group has become the leading provider of a unique range of analytical testing services to clients across multiple industries: over 200,000 analytical methods for evaluating the safety, identity, composition, authenticity, origin, traceability and purity of biological substances and products.

The biodegradability tests proposed by Eurofins Ecotoxicologie France follow the standardised methods set out by the OECD and quantify the impact of the substances on the environment. French Eurofins laboratories are organized into Centers of Excellence and have COFRAC ISO / IEC 17025 accreditation, as well as Governmental approval.

alumina-refinery-boiler-water-treatment

Ten years with FINEAMIN | Alumina Refinery

Project Details
Client name Alum SA
Plant type Alumina Refinery
Treatment started 2011
Boiler manufacturer Vulcan SA
Steam temperature 540°C
Steam production 200t/h
Steam turbine 12 MW

About the project

Alum SA, the recently modernized, sole alumina refinery in Romania, with a production capacity of 600.000 tons per year, is part of one of the largest vertically integrated aluminium manufacturers’ group in Europe, ALRO, operating since 1965. ALRO GROUP mainly uses the company’s output, for aluminium production.

After the modernization, the company wanted to replace the old boiler water conditioning regime: hydrazine & ammonia, with a more safe & environmentally friendly product.

Boiler Projected Steam Capacity Actual Steam Production Pressure Superheated Steam Temperature
Boiler 1 105t/h 100t/h 17 bar 250°C
Boiler 2 120t/h 100t/h 100 bar 540°C

SCENARIO

FACTORY UPGRADE

Following a complex upgrading program, the alumina refinery needed to increase even more operational performance of their boilers by an efficient anti-corrosion anti-scale program, protect their workers and be in compliance with the European norms on environment protection regarding boiler water chemicals.

  • Steam used in alumina production resulting in polluted condensate
  • Low pH
  • Wish to replace hydrazine

SOLUTION

TESTING FINEAMIN 90

In 2010, the alumina refinery has forwarded a request for FINEAMIN products as an environmentally compatible replacement for hydrazine.

In 2011, one-month FINEAMIN 90 test was started. The treatment proposed was based on all volatile polyamines, without oxygen scavenger. Its other alternative was 88 SCAV 25, also a polyamines mixture, but with a small content of organic oxygen scavenger – DEHA.

RESULTS

9 YEARS WITH FINEAMIN

During the test, FINEAMIN 90 proved its efficiency, without oxygen scavenger, and it has been used inside the alumina refinery for more than 9 years now without issues. By treating the boiler water with a small product quantity, the pH has been maintained within limits, risk of corrosion and scale due to polluted condensate was decreased and residual oxygen was not a reason to worry anymore.

  • Environmentally compatible & no special health protection measures needed!

SAIDEF Incineration Plant Boiler Water Treatment | A Filming-Amines Case Study

Project Details
Client name Saidef SA
Plant type Incineration & Recycling
Treatment started 2007
Boiler manufacturer Wehrle
Water temperature 200°C
Steam production 50t/h
Steam turbine 10 MW Siemens / ABB.

About the project

Located in the canton of Fribourg, the French part of Switzerland, by the Sarine river, SAIDEF SA is a modern waste incineration and recycling plant with two operation lines. The factory incinerates household and industrial waste and, at the same time, recycles it by producing electricity and steam to supply the district heating networks in the Fribourg area.

SCENARIO

SAIDEF operates 24 hours a day and is shut down for only 3 weeks per year for inspection.

Under intense operational conditions, SAIDEF long term availability and reliability are a must and altogether dependent on a performant plant protection, especially for the steam-water cycle. With all of this in mind, the administration was searching for modern, environmentally friendly solutions to treat the steam –  water cycle metal parts (pipes, boiler turbine) against corrosion and deposits, and keep installation trouble-free since the first day of operation.

SOLUTION

SAIDEF started operating in 2001 and has been using FINEAMIN chemicals since 2007.

The advanced steam-water cycle chemistry applied was only one product – FINEAMIN 06, a single blend consisting of multiple components to satisfy all metal parts protection with only one dosing point. The product acts as a corrosion inhibitor and prevents any accumulation of deposits due to its ultra-hydrophobization capacities. Applied on metal surfaces, it forms a monomolecular film inside systems, a barrier between water and metal keeping carbon dioxide away from surface and not allowing deposits adhere to it.

RESULTS

For more than 13 years, FINEAMIN corrosion inhibitors have kept metal surfaces trouble-free.

For more than 13 years, SAIDEF has been using FINEAMIN 06 to obtain & preserve metal passivation and has been operating without any troubles in the steam-water cycle. Polyamines-based products for water treatment were the only chemicals chosen and used from 2007 until today . No corrosion or deposits were observed during the yearly inspections do in this period, and no damages were recorded. The pipes are also regularly inspected every year. The turbine is inspected every five years by a third party.
